The Westshore of Lake Tahoe, often referred to as “the best shore” by locals, is known for its quiet, forested setting and classic Tahoe charm. Stretching along Highway 89 between Tahoe City and South Lake Tahoe, this area offers a more relaxed and less developed feel compared to other parts of the lake. With towering pines, stunning lake views, and a slower pace, the Westshore appeals to those looking for a true mountain-lake lifestyle.

The Westshore is made up of several small communities, each with its own unique character and appeal. While services are more limited, featuring a handful of local markets, restaurants, and gas stations, the trade-off is a peaceful environment that feels removed from the busier tourist areas. Residents and visitors are drawn to the natural beauty, from early morning sunrises over the lake to quiet afternoons spent on scenic beaches.

Location

The Westshore of Lake Tahoe is located along Highway 89 on the western edge of the Lake, between Tahoe City to the north and South Lake Tahoe to the south. This stretch of shoreline is known for its scenic drive, lake access points, and proximity to both state parks and ski resorts, while maintaining a more secluded atmosphere.

History

The Westshore has long been associated with the original “Old Tahoe” lifestyle, dating back to the early 1900s when families built summer cabins along the Lake. Many of these historic properties still exist today, contributing to the area’s timeless character. Over the years, the Westshore has remained intentionally less developed than other parts of Lake Tahoe, preserving its natural beauty and quiet appeal.

Amenities

The Westshore offers a range of amenities centered around outdoor recreation and a relaxed Tahoe lifestyle. Residents and visitors enjoy access to hiking and biking trails, including those in Sugar Pine Point State Park, as well as beautiful public beaches and lake access points along the shoreline. Water activities such as kayaking, paddleboarding, sailing, and water skiing are popular during the summer months.

In the winter, the area provides access to nearby ski resorts like Homewood Mountain Resort and Alpine Meadows, along with opportunities for snowmobiling and backcountry skiing. While the Westshore maintains a quieter, more rustic feel, there are also local restaurants, small markets, and community gathering spots that add to its charm.

Real Estate Market

The Westshore offers a diverse range of real estate, from classic Tahoe cabins tucked into the forest to lakefront homes and larger private estates. Buyers can find everything from cozy vacation properties to newer luxury homes with expansive lake views.

One of the most appealing aspects of the Westshore real estate market is its authenticity and variety. Whether you’re looking for a nostalgic “Old Tahoe” retreat or a modern lakefront property, this area provides a unique opportunity to own a piece of Tahoe’s most serene and scenic shoreline.
