The Tahoma neighborhood is a charming and beloved community located approximately 8 miles south of Tahoe City, California. Nestled between Sugar Pine Point State Park and Homewood, Tahoma offers a laid-back, local vibe that appeals to both full-time residents and vacation homebuyers. This neighborhood is known for its friendly atmosphere, easy access to outdoor recreation, and old Tahoe charm. As long-time locals and trusted real estate agents in Tahoe City California, we love helping buyers and sellers in Tahoma because it truly embodies the Tahoe lifestyle.

Location

Tahoma sits on the West Shore of Lake Tahoe, in Placer County, just north of Meeks Bay and south of Homewood. The neighborhood is uniquely positioned near General Creek Campground and the entrance to Sugar Pine Point State Park, making it a prime location for outdoor lovers. The layout is a level grid of about 10 by 6 streets, providing a sunny, walkable environment surrounded by towering pines and nearby lake access.

History

Originally developed in the early-to-mid 20th century, Tahoma grew as a classic West Shore retreat for families looking to escape the heat of Sacramento and the Bay Area. Many of the original cabins still stand, lovingly maintained or restored to preserve their rustic character. Over the decades, Tahoma has developed its own identity and local pride—many residents refer to it affectionately as its own little “city” on the West Shore.

Community & Amenities

Tahoma may be small, but it has everything you need for mountain living. There’s a locally run grocery store that also rents movies, sells fresh-baked pies, and serves up some of the best homemade sandwiches and bread anywhere on the lake. Additional amenities include a hair salon, locksmith, boutique lodging options, and proximity to restaurants and shops in nearby Homewood and Tahoe City.

The area also provides direct access to hiking, biking, backcountry skiing, and swimming via Sugar Pine Point State Park. During winter, locals enjoy cross-country ski trails, while summer offers lakeside adventures just minutes from home.

Real Estate in Tahoma

The Tahoma real estate market includes a mix of old Tahoe-style cabins, mid-century vacation homes, and newer builds tucked into the forest. It’s a popular neighborhood for both second homeowners and full-time residents thanks to its affordability (relative to lakefront neighborhoods), charm, and access to year-round recreation.

Homes in Tahoma often sit on level lots with good sun exposure, and many feature woodsy architecture, large decks, and cozy interiors that echo the area’s rustic history. Whether you’re looking for a classic cabin getaway or a newer mountain escape, Tahoma offers diverse options. As real estate agents in Tahoe City California with deep knowledge of the West Shore, we can help you navigate this unique market.

Why Buyers & Sellers Love Tahoma

Tahoma’s easygoing nature and strong sense of community make it a favorite for buyers looking for that true “Old Tahoe” feel. Sellers benefit from strong demand, particularly among families and outdoor enthusiasts seeking proximity to parks, ski areas, and the lake—all without the high price tag of some resort neighborhoods. The neighborhood is also a solid choice for buyers who want a vacation rental opportunity or a low-key second home.
