Bridge on old road at Donner Pass, overlooking Donner Lake
Donner Lake
Donner Lake is a breathtaking alpine lake just west of historic downtown Truckee. The lake reaches depths of approximately 238 feet and is known today for boating, paddle boarding, kayaking, swimming, and excellent trout fishing. While it offers all the beauty of Lake Tahoe, Donner Lake maintains a quieter, close-knit community atmosphere that many residents cherish.
The lake’s name comes from the ill-fated Donner Party of 1846–47, a group of pioneers who became snowbound in the Sierra Nevada during one of the harshest winters on record. Their story remains one of the most well-known chapters of California’s westward migration history. Today, Donner Memorial State Park at the east end of the lake preserves this history and celebrates the resilience of early settlers who helped shape the Truckee region.
Lakefront homes range from charming vintage cabins dating back to the early 1900s to newly constructed luxury estates. Most traditional lakefront properties are located along the south shore, where homes often feature private piers and small rocky-sand beaches. On the north shore, “split lakefront” properties (with a road between the home and the water) offer elevated views, private piers, and beach access at a more accessible price point. Compared to Lake Tahoe lakefronts, Donner Lake typically offers a more relaxed pace and often a more attainable entry point into waterfront ownership.

Serene Lakes
Serene Lakes
Serene Lakes is a peaceful mountain community located on Donner Summit, west of Truckee and about 15 miles northwest of Lake Tahoe. The neighborhood surrounds two connected alpine lakes- Lake Serena and Lake Dulzura- which together span approximately 77 acres.
The Donner Summit area played a critical role in California’s early transportation history. It was the route of both the Donner Party and, later, the Transcontinental Railroad, completed in 1869. Remnants of historic railroad tunnels can still be found nearby, and the summit remains a symbol of Sierra Nevada engineering and pioneer determination.
Serene Lakes itself was developed in the mid-20th century as a mountain retreat community. Today, it is known for its quiet forested setting, granite peaks, and year-round recreation. In summer, residents enjoy kayaking, swimming, and hiking. In winter, the area transforms into a snow-covered playground with easy access to Sugar Bowl, Royal Gorge, and Donner Ski Ranch.
Lakefront homes at Serene Lakes provide a true “cabin in the woods” feel at a fraction of the price of Tahoe and Donner lakefront properties. The community is relaxed, friendly, and deeply connected to its mountain heritage.
